Hollantilaiset olivat ensimmäiset uudisasukkaat, jotka saapuivat Lenape heimon asuttamalle alueelle.

1638 Ruotsalaiset ( joita suomalaisetkin olivat tähän aikaan) uudisasukkaat valloittivat tilaa hollantilaisilta ja perustivat siirtokunnan New Sweden- Uusi Ruotsi Forth Christinaan. Myöhemmin ruotsalaiset myös rakensivat Fort Nya Korsholmenin (Korsholm on Vaasan entinen nimi). Siirtokunta säilyi melko itsenäisenä, kunnes William Penn perusti Philadelphian Pennsylvanian siirtokuntien pääkaupungiksi vuonna 1682.

Tänä päivänä Philadelphiassa asuu 1,5 miljoonaa ihmistä ja metropolialueella yli 4 miljonaa.

Yksi kaupungin lempinimistä on Veljellisen rakkauden kaupunki.

Dutch settlers were first to arrive to the area of Lenape tribe.

1638 Swedish (at the time Finland was part of Sweden) settlers started to spread around the valley and took charge of the area. Swedish built Forth Cristina and called the place Colony of New Sweden. Later on they built Fort Nya Korsholm ( after town in Finland). Situation stayed the same until 1682 when William Penn founded the city of Philadelphia to serve as the capital of Pennsylvania Colony.

Now days city has a population of 1,5 million and in metropolitan area is home for 4 million people.

One of the nicknames is The City of Brotherly Love.
